Dyn is a cloud-based Internet performance company based in Manchester, New Hampshire. The company was founded in 2001 and has over 1 million customers, including Twitter, Etsy, and UPS. They raised a $38 million Series A in 2012.
The goal of their service is to give companies the ability to monitor, control, and optimize their cloud infrastructure to improve the end user experience. They do this by providing a global network of hundreds of sensors, millions of test points, and rapidly expanding traffic management POPs to give users the tools needed to keep their websites and applications up and running at all times.
The company offers a suite of Internet performance products like Internet Intelligence, IP Transit Intelligence, Traffic Director, Managed DNS, and Managed DNS Express. They also offer domain services and email products.
The DYN Anycast network consists of 20 data centers globally where their DNS and other products are deployed. The network is split into two separate constellations to provide active/active failover between the two in the event of a catastrophic failure.
DYN offers a number of different services (as you’ll see below) and pricing can vary depending on what service you’re using, how many queries you need, etc. The table above shows their 3 most popular managed DNS packages. Larger companies can add more zones and other advanced features such as Active Failover, Round Robin Load Balancing, and Internet Intelligence. Each service typically carries a flat monthly fee of $100-500/mo.
DYN has 3 primary product groups; Internet Intelligence, Traffic Management, and Domain Services.
Internet Intelligence: this product monitors the world’s largest cloud and CDN providers and provides the customer with insights about availability and performance in their target markets, along with real-time alerts about potential issues. Internet Intelligence can monitor public clouds like AWS, content delivery networks, and even transit.
Traffic Management: this is their managed Anycast DNS product which has 18 points of presence around the world and allows customers to secure and manage their traffic to keep their sites available, even when outages occur. Dyn DNS can help protect against DNS attacks and improve performance by rerouting traffic to better performing end points when degradation occurs.
Domain Services: this service includes domain registration and Remote Access, which allows users to remotely access any device using an easy to remember custom hostname rather than an IP address.
Why Choose DYN?
DYN is one of the oldest and most respected managed DNS providers on the market, and their Internet Intelligence product offers something very companies can. There are plenty of DNS services to choose from, but very few have access to the amount of data that DYN does, which allows them to make faster and more intelligent routing decisions than most of their competitors.
