Hola CDN is a Tel Aviv based content delivery network built specifically for video using a Peer to Peer HTTP overlay network. Prior to Hola CDN the company has previously released 2 other products; Hola VPN and Luminati.io. Now they are bringing their P2P technology to video delivery market. The company recently closed $17 million in Series C funding and has raised $30 million to date.
Hola operates a global network of low-cost servers running their P2P technology coupled with code running on the client (player) side which “auctions”, selects, and delivers video chunks from multiple locations (either Hola CDN or your own existing CDN) depending on the need. Generally, the first chunks of video are delivered by the fastest servers, while subsequent chunks are served by the lowest cost servers. By pulling most chunks from the low-cost Hola CDN, video delivery costs are reduced without sacrificing performance. It works similar to a RAID controller for video.
Hola CDN does not publish a public network map, they only state that they operate low-cost servers in low-cost locations to keep costs down. The goal with this particular CDN is not the fastest performance or lowest latency, but the cheapest video delivery.
Hola CDN Pricing
Hola CDN pricing is simple… $.01/GB, no minimums, no setup fees, no commitment. However, it is important to note that Hola is meant to be used in conjunction with your existing CDN as part of a dual CDN strategy. In their own words, they offer “low-cost servers in low-cost locations” meant to take over the video stream after the initial video junks are served by an existing high performance CDN. They also offer their open source video player and user experience dashboard for free to all users.
As stated above, the key feature of Hola CDN is being able to reduce video delivery costs by delivering the initial chunks in a video stream via a high performance CDN and then jumping in and serving the remaining chunks via their low-cost servers. This is accomplished using their proprietary video player that was built with VideoJS. The Hola player also offers advanced video experience analytics, multi-platform compatibility, and custom branding with no watermark all for free.
The user experience dashboard (also free) gives you full visibility into how viewers are experiencing your streams. It also includes the multi-CDN controller & A/B testing tools. This provides the customer with important data such as average time to start (buffering time), average seek time, % of users who experience buffering, and more.
