MaxCDN is a content delivery network based in Los Angeles, California. Although the company has been around since 2009, it is often referred to as a “next generation” CDN due to the real-time nature of their platform which includes instant purging, instant SSL, and real-time reporting.
MaxCDN supports open-source software and is an Nginx funding partner that hosts Nginx servers in Europe, North America and Asia.
MaxCDN formerly operated a sister company called NetDNA that was more full featured and targeted medium and large web companies while MaxCDN served smaller consumer users. As of the end of 2013, NetDNA is now MaxCDN Enterprise.
MaxCDN currently has 19 data centers globally, including one in Sao Paulo and one in Tel Aviv. They use 100% solid-state drives and Anycast routing. In terms of network footprint they are one of the smaller CDNs on the market, but they typically perform well in 3rd party testing, especially in North America.
MaxCDN offers tiered usage based pricing that is publicly available on their website. They recently split their pricing up into 3 plan: Entrepeneur (100GB-1TB), Professional (5-25TB), and Custom (25TB and up).
Custom Plan Pricing
The smallest plan starts at $.09/GB and Custom plans start at $.06/GB (North America/Europe) and go down with volume. As with most CDNs, they do offer custom pricing for those with high volume traffic or who are willing to commit to a long term contract. Custom plans also include additional features like VIP support and a dedicated account manager.
MaxCDN offers all the real-time features you would expect from a “next-gen” CDN like instant purging, SSL deployment, and real-time analytics. For enterprise customers they also offer a Rules engine for more advanced content control, origin shield to improve offload and protect your origin servers, and a very granular API. All plans include 24/7 technical support which includes phone, email, and chat. Enterprise plans include dedicated VIP support.
Rules: Control how your content behaves on every MaxCDN edge server with EdgeRules.
Origin Shield: Protect your origin server from request overload with this mid-tier caching layer.
API: Integrate users, zones, and other resources into your applications with REST API.
SSL: Secure your traffic directly from the edge with custom or shared SSL options.
MaxCDN is a good option for small and medium businesses that need an easy to use CDN at a low price. The network scale isn’t as large as many of their competitors, but they perform well in North America and allow for a lot of control over your content. They also integrate easily with most CMS platforms and are a fan favorite among many of the world’s WordPress publishers.
