Rackspace Inc. is a global managed cloud computing company headquartered in San Antonio, TX. They have been in business since 1998 and now have offices in Australia, the UK, Switzerland, Israel, The Netherlands, India, and Hong Kong. They operate data centers in Texas, Illinois, Virginia, the UK, Australia, and Hong Kong. After over 15 years in business they now have over 3,000 employees and 300,000+ customers in 120 countries.
Rackspace has 2 primary businesses; cloud servers and dedicated servers. For both options they offer managed infrastructure and operations for those who don’t want to proactively manage their own infrastructure. They also offer a number of other related services, including CDN, which is powered by the Akamai network. They are partnered with both Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. In late 2014, they announced they would sell and support Google Work apps.
Rackspace currently has 6 data centers around the globe where they offer dedicated and cloud servers. Three of these locations are in the United States with one in London, one in Hong Kong, and one in Sydney. They offer industry leading SLA agreements that promise 100% availability via redundant power, heating, and cooling systems.
Pricing and Contract Terms
Like most infrastructure services the pricing is highly custom depending on what you need and where. They do not publicly post pricing and you’ll need to contact a sales representative to get a quote. They do offer transparent, pay-as-you-go pricing for Akamai CDN with rates starting at just $.10/GB in the US. This is a great option for smaller companies who want to get on the Akamai network but may not qualify for their minimums or want to go through the sometimes long and complex sales process (Akamai generally does not offer plans under $1,000/month with a 12 month commit).
